‘Legally Blonde’s’ Selma Blair may need legal assistance after split

She may be best known for her role in “Cruel Intentions” or opposite Reese Witherspoon on “Legally Blonde.” Although Selma Blair may be a legal genius in the second film, she may find herself in need of some legal assistance in her real, private family life.

According to sources, the actress recently split from her boyfriend, Jason Bleick. The 40-year-old actress and fashion designer Bleick fought “non-stop.” One source said that with their constant arguing, it is no doubt that the couple split. While this may make for interesting gossip on the entertainment websites, it is only part of what has them facing a possible legal issue.

What is left out of the report above is that the couple has a 14-month-old little boy. The son was born to the couple outside of marriage. While parents who get divorced have their own issues in terms of child custody, the process is slightly different for those who are not married.

Some couples attempt to create their own child custody arrangements without the assistance of the court. However, without a legal agreement, there is no enforceability of the plan that is created. For example, a couple may decide to share the child every other week, but what happens when one parent decides that this won’t work? What if one parent does not have the income to adequately support the child and the other parent suddenly refuses to help?

Another issue involved in this type of situation is father’s rights. A father must establish paternity before they can enforce their rights to visitation. Paternity cases also often involve a parent who wants to enforce obligations such as child support and not just rights to a child.
