Gibson’s stepmom blames him for her acrimonious split from his dad

The California courts are dealing with another divorce for Mel Gibson — just not his. The talented but often controversial Hollywood hyphenate is reportedly being blamed by his stepmother for her impending divorce from his father, who is in his mid-90s. The stepmother, who is in her 70s, has gone so far as to file papers in family court demanding that the 56-year-old star be added as a party to the proceedings and that he pay her attorney’s fees in the case.

Her husband, in his own divorce filing last month, accused his wife of abuse and asked the court to order her to pay his legal fees. He is apparently quite ill with a number of maladies, but she has reportedly asserted that the drugs he is taking to treat his health issues are not doing him any good. She wants him to stop the medications that she claims are merely prolonging his suffering.

She says she has already racked up $30,000 in legal fees, and she estimates the whole divorce will run to $65,000. She is also asking for $15,000 per month in support payments.

She asserts that the younger Gibson has sometimes come between her and her husband, at one point throwing her out of her house; the latter incident prompted her to file a restraining order (the matter has not been resolved). According to court documents, she accuses Gibson of not treating her with respect or even politeness. She asserts that he has, at times, spit in her face and threatened her. The situation has gotten so bad, she says, that she fears for her safety.

The couple married in 2002 after Gibson’s mother passed away.
